AGRICULTURE

            The climate of Catbalogan is conductive to crop production.  The type of soil, which is predominant in the municipality, is also suitable for the growing of crops yet agriculture has played a minor role in the development of Catbalogan.

            The number one staple food of the town is mainly rice which is about 90% of the populace depend on this grain and 10% in corn and other rootcrops particularly in far flung barangays.

            Productivity of the municipality’s agricultural areas (farming) is low, caused by lack of farm to market road particularly in farming barangays, situated in the interior part of the municipality which affects the production cost as transport cost is high. 

FISHING

            Catbalogan has 57 barangays, 24 of which are marine Barangays.  The major fishing products caught along the Maqueda Bay are galonggong, alumahan, tamban, pompano, bisugo, lapu-lapu, rabbitfish, slipmouth and assorted.  Other fish resources are seaweed, mussel/oysters, crabs and shells.

              The ground area of fishing in Catbalogan is the Maqueda Bay and Samar Sea.

FORESTRY

              The Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR –Catbalogan) has Reforestation Project which started in 1989 – 1992 (3 years contract).  About 102 families were beneficiaries in the 372 has. area contracted, and the number of trees planted are 620, 124 within the said area, the species planted are G-melina, mahogany, narra, Acosta and mangium.

               The plans and programs of this agency were the following, to wit:

         1. Maintenance and protection activities of the reforestation area.

         2. Turn-over of those areas for Forest Lease Mgt. Agreement (FLMA).

         a. Forest Area 

         The classified forestland of Catbalogan is 7,534 hectares, and 561.0 hectares is contract reforestation for protection and FLMA. 

         b. Watershed Reserves

         As of June 1994, the Watershed Proclaimed Forest Reserved area is 804.90 hectares.

         c. Principal Forest Product

         The major or principal forest product of Catbalogan is the Lawaan lumber, which is cost Thirty-Two pesos (P32.00) per board feet.
